Annual Zora Neale Hurston Writer's Conference -B-CU

The College of Arts and Humanities at Bethune-Cookman University welcomes proposals for its annual Zora Neale Hurston Conference to be held virtually on February 16-17, 2023. Hurston, Woman on Fire!! celebrates Hurston’s spirit of resistance, reflected in her life and her work, and recognizes established and emerging scholarship. Our keynote speaker is Carla Kaplan, author of Zora Neale Hurston: A  Life in Letters


     You are invited to submit abstracts for individual or panel presentations on topics related to Hurston or that reflect her multidisciplinary interests. Presentations can be scholarly, pedagogical, and/or creative. We are also interested in student panels. Please submit 250–300-word abstracts by January 15, 2023, here. Presenters will be notified by January 20, 2023.

ZORA! Festival- Takes place in January each year in Eatonville and throughout Orange County, this multi-day, celebrates the life and work of 20th century writer, folklorist, and anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston; her hometown, Eatonville, the nation’s oldest incorporated African American municipality; and the contributions people of African ancestry have made to the U.S. and world culture.
