About

Originally published in 1906, the Chicago Style Manual is now in its 17th edition. It was essentially written as a reference for authors, editors, copywriters, publishers, and other areas where the written word is primarily used. It’s now used by other disciplines as well.

There are two Chicago Manual Styles: Notes-Bibliography System and Author-Notes System.

  • Notes-Bibliography System is often used in literature, history, and the arts
  • Author-Notes System is often used in the social sciences

Although citation makers can format your in-text citations and references, with some even alphabetizing the entries for you, they are not perfect and will still require double-checking. Be sure to check with your instructor to see if you are permitted to use them.
