James Poitier

Brief Biographical Sketch

Mr. James Poitier, the longest standing member of the B-CU Band staff, serves as an Associate Director of University Bands and Professor of Practice for Trumpet at Bethune-Cookman University. His prior experience includes teaching junior high school band and serving as assistant band director. Mr. Poitier’s arrangements have been performed at colleges, professional football games, as well as television, including the Fox movie, Drumline, the Ellen DeGeneres Show, Netflix and more. Occasionally he appears as guest conductor throughout the state of Florida.
A native of Miami, Mr. “P,” as his students refer to him, holds a Master of Music degree in Trumpet Performance from the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago, a Master of Science in Management and Administration of Educational Programs from Nova Southeastern University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from Bethune-Cookman College.
